Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate profit margin?+

Profit margin is profit divided by revenue, times 100. Profit is the selling price minus the cost. For example, if cost is ₹80 and revenue is ₹100, profit is ₹20 and margin is 20 ÷ 100 × 100 = 20%.

What is the difference between margin and markup?+

Margin is profit as a percentage of the selling price, while markup is profit as a percentage of the cost. A ₹20 profit on a ₹80 cost item sold at ₹100 is a 20% margin but a 25% markup.

Can this calculator show a loss?+

Yes. If the cost is higher than the selling price, the profit, margin and markup all become negative, showing the size of the loss.

How do I increase my profit margin?+

You can raise the selling price, reduce the cost per unit, or both. Even small changes compound, so use this calculator to test different price and cost scenarios quickly.
